FAQ

Beds

What is the difference between a SleepSafe, SleepSafe II and SleepSafer?

The main difference is the height of the safety rail protection above the mattress. Each bed’s overall height is about 10-12 inches taller than the one below. Even though the actual safety rail itself does not change in size (all safety rails are 14 inches tall), the overall height of safety rail protection changes with each bed model. The head and foot boards and the side panels below the safety rail changes in size.

Another important difference is the transfer height — the distance from the floor to the top edge of the bed’s wooden side panel (below the safety rail).

• SleepSafe – LOW BED has a 22″ Transfer Height

• SleepSafe II – MEDIUM BED has a 32″ Transfer Height

• SleepSafer – HIGH BED has a 26″ Transfer Height

Is a battery backup system available for beds with electric foundations, in case of a power failure?

Yes. Battery backup systems (UPS) are available from retailers such as Staples or Office Depot.

We recommend that you purchase a UPS battery back up unit such as APC’s ES 750. This unit will give enough power to operate the bed for a limited time. This unit has 6 battery powered outlets to provide power for other devices as well.

What kind of electric outlet is necessary for electric foundations?

A standard, grounded (3 prong) 110 volt electric outlet is all that is needed for our electricly powered foundations. No special or additional electricity or accommodations are necessary.  We recommend that you use an equipment power surge protector, like you would for your computer or other expensive electronic components, to protect your bed from a power surge.

Will a standard lift fit under the bed?

Yes. There is a 7.5 inch clearance under all SleepSafe Beds to accommodate most standard lifts.

Is there any storage room under the bed?

The amount of storage space under the bed depends on the model you are interested in. Our SleepSafe II – Medium bed with Manual Crank foundation provides the most storage space beneath the bed with approximately 16 inches of clear height underneath. Our other models have minimal storage space underneath, with an average of 7.5 inches of clear height.

Do you have beds with a manual crank?

Yes. We have a articulating foundation option that includes two manual hand cranks for all of our bed models. One crank will raise and lower the head section of the bed and the other will raise and lower the knee section of the bed.

However, there is NO Manual Hi-Lo crank adjustment. If Hi-Lo adjustment is needed, we offer a fully electric Hi-Lo foundation option that is available in any model or size.

Can I buy a bed directly from SleepSafe Beds?

We typically do not sell our beds direct. Most SleepSafe® Beds are sold through a network of more than 3000 Durable Medical Equipment providers nationwide. These courteous, knowledgeable and trusted providers are set up to assist you with submitting an insurance claim, will make your bed purchase, accept delivery and deliver and install your bed at your home. They are an integral part of the process in acquiring a SleepSafe® Bed. We as the manufacturer are not set up to assist with insurance claims, nor can we bill on your behalf.

If we were able to sell a bed to an individual, we would require payment in full, in advance, before a bed shipped. You would incur an additional $275.00 for drop shipping a bed to a residence. The individual would have to accept responsibility for accepting delivery and installation. And most importantly, there would be no local representation for after sale service if needed. We strongly recommend, even someone who wants to pay cash, to go through a local DME provider. Using a DME provider to acquire a SleepSafe® Bed for Service and Peace of Mind: Priceless.

Can I get a SleepSafe Bed in other lengths?

All standard size SleepSafe® Beds are 77 inches long. However, we can manufacture custom lengths for an additional charge. Please contact us toll-free at  866-852-2337 for further details.

How do I get replacement parts or what do I do if I have a repair problem?

Please call your local dealer that helped you purchase the bed. They should be able to help with any problem you may have. If for whatever reason your original dealer cannot help you, please contact us directly so we may assist you at 866-852-2337.

Please try to have your original Sales Order number, which is the same as the serial number when you call. This number can be found on the outside of the headboard, centered at the bottom on a small clear sticker.  It will be a 4 or 5 digit number. Serial numbers can be found on any bed manufactured after 2009. Beds before that time did not have serial numbers and can be traced using the original Sales Order Confirmation that your dealer will have.

How do I find the serial number for my bed?

This number can be found on the outside of the headboard, centered at the bottom on a small clear sticker. Will be a 4 or 5 digit number. Serial numbers can be found on any bed manufactured after 2009. Beds before then did not have serial numbers and can be traced using the original Sales Order Confirmation that your dealer will have.

Prior to 2009 only beds with electric foundations had serial numbers for the electric frame. On an older Articulated (Plus) foundation, the serial number can be found under the head section of the metal electric frame…it starts with the letter W. Serial numbers can be found on an older Hi Lo foundation on a metal plate stamped on the metal frame around the knee section

My child has outgrown the height of the safety rails, can I convert it to a higher model?

Yes. Any SleepSafe® – low bed or SleepSafe® II – medium bed can be converted to a higher bed. A SleepSafer® can be retrofitted with a SleepSafer® Enclosed Extension to offer an additional 16¼ inches of safety height protection.

To convert any bed to a higher model, while keeping the same foundation you will need to purchase a Conversion Kit from SleepSafe® Beds. This kit will include a new head and foot board and side panels. You will use your existing mattress, foundation, casters  and safety rails.

Insurance may or may not cover the additional cost of the conversion kit. It may be necessary to submit another letter of medical necessity justifying the change. You will need to make the purchase through your local provider.

My child has outgrown his twin sized bed, can I convert it to a full size bed?

Yes. Any SleepSafe® Bed can be converted from a twin sized bed to a full sized bed.

To convert any bed from twin to full you will need to purchase a Conversion Kit from SleepSafe® Beds. This kit will include a new head and foot board, mattress and foundation. You will use your existing side panels, casters and safety rails. Insurance may or may not cover the additional cost of the conversion kit. It may be necessary to submit another letter of medical necessity justifying the change. You will need to make the purchase through your local provider.

Is there any maintenance that I should do to my bed?

As with any mechanical piece of equipment that has motors, electronic parts or moving parts, simple maintenance should be performed periodically. Basically, at least once or twice a year, you should go around the bed and check all screws and fasteners for tightness. Over time through movement and use, a bolt may become loose. If you find a screw or bolt that is a bit loose, you can use a pair of pliers or a wrench to tighten.

Be sure to ask your dealer at the time of installation to leave the Allen wrenches that SleepSafe® Beds provides with you so you may use them at a later date should anything need tightening.

You can clean your bed with water and mild detergent using a soft cloth. Avoid abrasives and solvents.

Are these beds approved for hospital use?

It all depends on the facility and its regulations.

Are these beds for children only?

No. All SleepSafe Beds are standard adult sized beds. They are 77 inches long and accommodate an adult up to 350 pounds.

How do I clean my SleepSafe Bed?

Clean with water and mild detergent using a soft cloth. Avoid abrasives and solvents.

What is the difference between an Articulated and Hi Lo foundation?

The articulated foundation allows the user to raise or lower the head and knee section of the bed, electrically by a wireless remote control.

The Hi-Lo foundation allows the user to raise and lower the head and knee section of the bed and the overall height of the mattress from the floor, electrically by a wired remote control.

Can I get a Hi-Lo foundation without head and foot adjustability?

No. You can get head and foot adjustment without Hi and Lo adjustment, but you cannot get Hi and Lo without head and knee because the Articulated foundation that offers head and foot adjustment is the base frame for the Hi-Lo. We simply add telescoping legs to add the third feature: The Hi-Lo.

What is the difference between a box spring and a bunkie board?

Each bed needs some type of foundation for the mattress to rest upon. With the Articulated and Hi Lo foundations, the mattress rests directly on the electric frame. With the fixed foundation, you have a sub-choice of a box spring or bunkie board for your mattress to lie upon. The only difference between the two is that a bunkie board is 2 inches high and a box spring is 8 inches high.

When the goal is to maximize safety rail height above the mattress you will choose a bunkie board so that the mattress surface can be positioned 6 inches lower within the enclosure. When the goal is to raise the mattress surface as far from the floor as possible, then you should choose a box spring so that the mattress will be positioned 6 inches higher. There is no price or comfort difference, only a height difference.

Can I add extra windows to the head and/or foot of ANY bed?

No. Extra windows can only be added to a SleepSafe II – Medium bed or a SleepSafer – High bed. The SleepSafe – Low bed’s head and foot boards do not have enough height above the mattress to add a window. The mattress would cover it.

Do you ship outside the US?

Yes. At this time we can readily ship to Canada. It is possible that we can ship to any country providing you have a freight forwarder or other arrangements can be made. Please keep in mind that shipping is included within the continental US. Any other shipping charges that may be incurred are the sole responsibility of the receiver.

Is the remote control wired or wireless?

Articulated foundations have  wireless remote control.

Important  Note: Because the Articulated foundation has a wireless remote control that is operated through radio frequencies, you cannot have more than TWO articulated beds within a 500 foot area. We can program the remotes so they will not interfere with each other, but we can only program 2 beds. If more than two beds are needed in one location, you MUST be sure that they are far enough away from each other, otherwise, when you operate one remote control, it may adjust the other bed in a different room.

Hi-Lo foundations have a wired remote control.

My child’s medical needs have changed, can I change the foundation?

Yes. Any SleepSafe Bed foundation can be converted to another choice.

To convert any bed’s foundation, you will need to purchase a Conversion Kit from SleepSafe® Beds. This kit will include a new foundation and side panels. You will use your existing mattress, casters, safety rails, head and foot boards. Insurance may or may not cover the additional cost of the conversion kit. It may be necessary to submit another letter of medical necessity justifying the change. You will need to make the purchase through your local provider.

Insurance

Does health insurance pay for SleepSafe Beds?

In most cases, when the bed is either prescribed by a physician or justified as Medically Necessary, health insurance can cover the bed as Durable Medical Equipment. Your local Durable Medical Equipment provider can assist you in gathering the necessary paperwork to submit your health insurance claim. Please call us toll-free at 866-852-2337 if you need help in finding a local dealer near you.

Does Medicaid pay for these beds?

In most cases State funded Medicaid, Medicaid  Waiver Programs, Early & Periodic Screening & Diagnostic Treatment (EPSDT) Benefit and other state funded programs can cover a SleepSafe® Bed when justified as Medically Necessary. Each State governs their own Medicaid  program within Federal Guidelines so the requirements may differ slightly from state to state. If your Medicaid  claim has been denied, you may want to consider an appeal or to seek the advice of a legal advocate in your area. You can find out more information in another section of our website: Insurance.

Will my bed require Prior Authorization from my insurance company?

It all depends on your health insurance. Most of the time your insurance company will require Prior Authorization. What this means is that your dealer will need to submit a claim, a prescription and many times a Letter of Medical Necessity to justify the purchase. After submitting the claim, they must wait for the insurance company to approve the purchase, BEFORE they will move forward and order the bed from us.

What documents are needed to submit with my insurance claim?

It all depends on your insurance company but most of the time your insurance company will require a prescription from your physician and many times a Letter of Medical Necessity to justify the purchase.

Where can I find help to write a Letter of Medical Necessity?

On our website, under ‘About Insurance’ you will find lots of useful information including several example letters of medical necessity (scroll to the bottom to the Insurance page to find these), guidelines to write your own and a link to help you with the appeals process when needed.

LMNbuilder.com can help your therapist or clinician write a letter for you. This web tool is invaluable when it comes to justifying a SleepSafe® bed and producing a high quality, very detailed Letter of Medical Necessity.

My insurance claim has been denied, what do I do now?

  1. Look to additional funding sources in your community such as non-profit organizations.
  2. Inquire about your eligibility for Medicaid or a Medicaid Waiver Program. If your child is still a minor, you may want to inquire with Medicaid about the Early & Periodic Screening & Diagnostic Treatment (EPSDT) which may cover the cost of a bed when straight Medicaid will not.
  3. Exercise your right to the appeals process. Be sure to document everything in detail. Stay within the published timeline for submission dates, deadlines, etc.
  4. Enter for a chance to win a free SleepSafe® Bed on our website where we give one bed away every calendar quarter.

Mattresses

Do you sell sheets?

We do not sell sheets, however standard sized sheets that are readily available at most retail stores will fit SleepSafe Beds.

Can I buy just a mattress?

Yes, but we do not recommend this for use for other bed types. Our mattresses are designed and custom sized to fit inside a SleepSafe Bed and may not be appropriate for other beds. Safety is our number one priority and our mattress fits snug within the wooden enclosure so that there is no room to burrow or become entrapped.

If your SleepSafe Bed was manufactured prior to 2009, and you are looking to replace your mattress, the size may be different, please call to confirm the size of the mattress for your bed 866-852-2337.

Our mattress dimensions are:

Twin – 37” wide by 77” long (most other standard mattresses are 39” x 75”)

Full – 51” wide by 77” long (most other standard mattresses are 54” x 75”)

Do I need special sized sheets?

No. Standard Twin or Full sized sheets readily available at any department store will fit SleepSafe® Beds.

Is the mattress “Waterproof”?

No, our mattresses are not waterproof, they are water resistant. Please keep in mind, as with any nylon based material, it is not designed to withstand repeated, long standing fluid. Over time, if fluid is allowed to pool up on the mattress surface it could potentially, eventually soak through.

SleepSafe® Beds use The Dynamic Elite Mattress™ with Visco Gel Technology (VGT)™ from Mason Medical, a ground-breaking support surface that provides optimized pressure redistribution, rapid heat dissipation, and vast increases in breathability compared to standard foam mattresses.

If the mattress surface is subject to excessive fluid, it is highly recommended that you use some type of protective cover over the mattress such as a full zip-on plastic cover.

Padding

What type of padding do you use?

The padding used for SleepSafe® Beds has the following specifications and features:

Cover Material:
• 70 Denier Nylon Fabric with a Specialized Fluid Resistant Healthcare Coating

Padding Features:
• Bacteria / Fungal resistant
• Fluid Proof
• Non-allergenic
• Easy to keep clean
• Malodor Protection
• Flame Retardant
• Stain / Tear Resistant
• Non-allergenic
• Anti-Static

If I order padding, will it cover the windows?

Yes. When padding is ordered, it is factory installed to cover all four sides of the interior, including the safety rails with the windows. If you order a  bed with padding, we do not recommend using the bed if any of the pads have been removed. We manufacture two different sized foundations for a bed with padding and a bed without padding. One is more narrow, allowing just enough space for the padding to be installed and extend below the mattress surface. A bed with no pads will come with a mattress and foundation that is a bit wider so that it makes full contact with all four sides of the interior of the bed. By making sure that either with or without pads, the mattress fits tightly within the enclosure, we eliminate the risk of entrapment or burrowing.

If I order extra windows in the head and foot board AND padding, will it cover those windows?

No. We can add an extra window to the head and/or foot board and factory install the padding just below the windows.

Can I order pads after I have already received my bed?

Yes. But at a higher cost than if they were purchased at the time of the bed purchase. To retrofit padding, you will need to purchase a new mattress and foundation (to allow room for the padding) in addition to the padding.

How does the padding attach to the bed?

Industrial strength Velcro. The safety rail pads are extended up and over the rails and attached on the outside and the head and foot boards pads extend just to the top of each and attach on the inside of the bed. Some have asked if their child will be able to pull them off and the answer is that we have never had a complaint of this. The pads go right to the edge of the leg in the head and foot board, so there’s not really enough space to get tiny fingers around it and the Velcro itself creates a very strong bond.

Safety Rails

Is there a fully enclosed bed available (canopy)?

No. At this time we do not offer any type of fully enclosed bed or canopy that can be used with any SleepSafe® Bed. The highest safety rail protection offered is 36” above the mattress.

In order to reach this maximum rail protection you must specify a SleepSafer® – High Bed, choose a fixed foundation (specifically a bunkie board) and install the foundation in the lowest position…this will render 36” of safety rail protection.

We also manufacture an SleepSafer® Extended Enclosure that can retrofit to an existing SleepSafer Bed or include with a new SleepSafer® Bed order. It offers an additional 16 ¼ inches of Safety Rail height.

Do you have bed without safety rails?

Yes. When safety rails are not needed but electric adjustment is, please inquire about our adjustable bed line, The Assured Comfort® by SleepSafe® Beds. For more information please visit AssuredComfortBed.com.

How much does a safety rail weigh?

Approximately 18-20 pounds depending on the color choice.

On the low and medium beds, the safety rails really never actually have to be removed. When they are lowered and hanging in place, they probably won’t be in the way. Only the SleepSafer® bed will need the top rail removed when full access to the mattress is needed.

When full access is needed in the SleepSafer® – High Bed, we recommend lowering the bottom safety rail first and leave it hanging in place. Next, lower the top rail and while it is hanging in its lowered position, then remove it by lifting its hardware and simply set aside. When replacing the rail, be sure to put it back the same way you took it off…in its lowered position first and then flip it up to lock in place. It’s much easier to handle when it’s in its lowered position because you are only dealing with onset of attachment points versus when it’s in its upright position you are maneuvering 4 attachment points.

Do all beds include windows in the safety rails?

Yes. All beds include 2 safety rails with 3 windows in each. On the low and medium beds, the two safety rails are divided, and one is installed on each side, allowing access to the mattress surface from each side. In order to maximize safety rail protection with the high bed, we tier the two safety rails one on top the other on one side, allowing access from only one side. The back is constructed of a solid wood panel. This normally does not cause any problems as the bed is so tall that most people put the bed against a wall and don’t need access from both sides. When a high bed is need AND access from both sides is important, a Dual View option can be added on. Dual View is only applicable to the high bed (the only one with only one side access); the bed will be manufactured with 4 safety rails, two tiered on each side, allowing access from both sides.
