Other manufacturers of safety beds may claim approval, but they have misinterpreted the statute.
The SleepSafe® Extension Bed and the InSIGHT bed offer fully enclosed environments for maximum safety.
The “hard-sided” SleepSafe® Extension Bed adds 16¾″ of safety height to the SleepSafer® Bed. This development allows 53″ between the top of the mattress to the top of rail when using a bunkie board as a fixed foundation. It can be ordered with or without a securely fastened top.
The “soft-sided” InSIGHT offers a 360° See-through screen surround and top. The zippered access is 55” wide by 42” high.
More information about both beds, refer to the FLYERS section under the PRODUCTS tab.
Yes. We make an optional Tubing Channel Cut-Out Cover that can be inserted into the Channel. The cover is fastened from the inside of the bed. For further information, call Customer Support at 866-852-2337.
If your child can reach over the safety rail and open the safety rail, it’s possible the rail height is too low. We offer conversion kits that increase the safety rail height for maximum safety. We also offer latch blocks that may be installed near the latch pin to deter your child from opening the safety rail. Call Customer Support to discuss your options at 866-852-2337.
We offer bed models that have head and knee articulation. Articulation is the raising of the head or knee section to a specific height. We offer this option in electric and manual foundations. The HEAD section moves from a flat position up to 70 degrees. The KNEE section moves from a flat position up to 40 degrees.
Once a bed is ordered by your Durable Medical Equipment (DME) provider, it may take up to 4 weeks to ship. However, production and shipping times vary throughout the year.
If you have an Electric Hilo Combo foundation, manufactured after January 2015, and it has stopped working, a remote reset may be the fix.
To reset your bed using the remote control, follow the reset instructions located on our website, under the PRODUCTS tab, down to FLYERS. You will see a flyer “Resetting your SleepSafe Bed”.
For assistance in resetting your SleepSafe® Bed manufactured before January 2015, contact Technical Support at 866.852.2337.
The two main differences are the safety rail height and the transfer height. The safety rail height is the distance from the mattress to the top of the safety rail. The transfer height is the distance from the floor to the point of entry into the bed. These measurements and more can be found on our Bed Specifications page located under the PRODUCTS tab.
Should you lose power, we suggest having a battery backup. An Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) can be purchased from your local office supply store such as Staples or Office Depot. We recommend a UPS unit such as APC’s ES 750. This unit will provide power to operate the bed for a limited time. The unit has six battery powered outlets to provide power for additional devices.
A standard, 3 prong grounded 110-volt electric outlet is needed to power electric foundations. We recommend you use a power surge protector to protect your SleepSafe® Bed from a power surge.
SleepSafe® Bed models have a 7.75 inch or 8-inch clearance beneath the bottom side panel to accommodate most standard lifts.
We do offer manual foundations with cranks. SleepSafe® Beds has four foundation choices with easy to operate hand cranks. The manual crank systems are located on the side of the bed, under the safety rail, making it easier and more convenient for room placement and operator use. Foundation choices are listed in Bed Specifications under the PRODUCTS tab.
All standard size SleepSafe® Beds are 77 inches long. However, we offer custom 85” and 60” lengths at an additional charge. Most bed models are offered in twin, full and queen sizes.
Please call your DME that helped you purchase the bed. They should help you with any problem you may have. If your DME is unable to help you, please contact Technical Support at 866-852-2337.
At SleepSafe® Beds, we are committed to ensuring your experience with our products remains exceptional from purchase to ongoing support. Whether you have questions about assembly, maintenance, or troubleshooting, our dedicated support team is here to assist you every step of the way.
The following list will help us help you.
• For Technical Support call 866-852-2337.
• If after business hours, please listen to the entire recorded message and call the cell number for the on-call Tech.
• Have the serial number or the purchase number from when it was purchased.
• If possible, call the Technician while you are with the bed.
• Be prepared to take photos, video, or Facetime.
• Familiarize yourself with our instructional videos and flyers located on our website under the Resources Tab.
Serial numbers can be found on any bed manufactured after 2009.
For beds manufactured in 2021 and later, the serial number can be located on the front of the footboard.
For beds prior to 2021, the serial number can be located on the outside of the headboard, centered at the bottom, on a small clear sticker. It will be a 4- or 5-digit number followed by the date it was manufactured.
Beds prior to 2009 did not have serial numbers but can be traced using the original sales order, purchase order and in some cases the bed user’s name.
All SleepSafe® Beds are standard adult sized beds. Most models are available in twin, full and queen sizes and will accommodate an adult up to 350 pounds.
The mattress supplied with your SleepSafe® Bed supports up to 350 pounds. The foundation can support more; however, weight support is usually limited to mattress specifications.
All surfaces of a SleepSafe® Bed can be cleaned with warm water and mild detergent using a soft cloth. Please avoid any abrasives and solvents.
In addition to our safety beds, we also manufacture, Assured Comfort® Hi-Low Adjustable Beds. Three models are available offering various features depending on the requirements of the individual using the bed. For more information, visit assuredcomfortbed.com.
An articulating bed foundation can only raise or lower the head and knee section either by electric remote control or by two manual cranks. The Hi-Lo Combo bed foundation can raise and lower the head and knee section and control the mattress height, either by remote control or manually with three cranks.
We offer a foundation with only the hi-lo adjustment. This foundation is offered only with a manual crank.
Fixed foundations come with a choice of a bunkie board or a box spring. The mattress lays on the option you choose. The bunkie board is 2” thick and a box spring is 6” thick.
To maximize safety rail protection above the mattress, choose a bunkie board. The mattress surface can be positioned 5 inches lower within the foundation. To raise the mattress surface from the floor, choose a box spring. The mattress will be positioned 5 inches higher allowing for a more flush transfer.
There is no price or comfort difference, only a height difference.
Before moving the SleepSafe® HiLo bed, it needs to be lowered all the way so that the towers are not touching the floor. If the towers are touching the floor and the bed is moved, you could damage the towers.
If ordered, our IV POLE kit can be installed anywhere on the headboard or footboard. It is a 30-inch aluminum pole with 4 ram hooks. For medical tubing, a 2″ x 18″ vertical channel can be requested.
The channel can be requested on the left, center, or right side of the headboard and footboard.
SleepSafe® Beds with Hi-Lo capability can be adjusted for a “flush transfer” position.
All SleepSafe® Beds without the Hi-Lo feature have settings to allow different rail height protection. During installation, one setting allows the mattress to be just above the side panel when the safety rail is down, allowing easier transfers from the bed.
Fixed foundations, using bunkie boards, cannot be set up for a “flush transfer”. This configuration is set up for maximum safety rail protection. The bed user will need to be lifted over the side panel to transfer.
For complete information, see the Bed Specifications, under the PRODUCTS tab.
Extra windows can be added to all beds.
All SleepSafe® Bed safety rails are 14½ inches high except for the Basic Bed safety rails which measure 19½ inches high.
The safety rails can be requested with plexiglass or mesh, however you wish.
SleepSafe® Beds manufactured after 2008 can be converted to another model, allowing for more safety rail protection.
A SleepSafe® Low Bed and SleepSafe® II Medium Bed can be converted to a SleepSafer® Tall Bed for more safety rail protection.
A SleepSafe II Medium Bed and a SleepSafer® Tall Bed can be retrofitted with an extension kit to offer additional height and more safety height protection. You can choose to have the top open or closed.
For conversions, work with your DME provider. If you have any questions, contact Customer Support at 866-852-2337.
Each SleepSafe® Bed safety rail, with cutout windows, weighs about 18 to 20 pounds depending on its finish. Solid safety rails, without windows, weigh about 25 pounds.
The top of the safety rail is attached by two latches at each end, located on the headboard and footboard bedposts. The bottom of the safety rail is supported by two hinge pins. When each side is manually unlatched, the safety rail will pivot down and rest on the side panel.
On the SleepSafe® Low Bed and SleepSafe® II Medium bed, the safety rails, when lowered, do not have to be removed.
For access into the SleepSafer® Tall Bed, first lower the bottom safety rail, then lower the top safety rail. While the top safety rail is in the lowered position, remove it by lifting it up and out from the hinge pins and set aside.
Note: When replacing the rail for the SleepSafer® Tall Bed, be sure to put it back the same way you took it off. Set it back in place in its lowered position first and then flip it up to lock in place.
The SleepSafe® Extension Bed has a fastener located on the side of the extension. To secure, flip the top safety rail up and lock it into position with the fastener.
All beds include safety rails with three plexiglass windows. The SleepSafe® Low Bed and SleepSafe® II Medium bed each have one safety rail on each side, allowing access to the mattress surface from both sides.
The SleepSafer® Tall bed has two safety rails that are tiered, one on top of the other. Bed access is only allowed on one side. The back side is a wood panel.
When access to both sides is required, a “Dual View” option is available. The bed will be manufactured with 4 safety rails, two tiered on each side.
Padding replacements are available. Please contact your original Durable Medical Equipment provider (DME). Your DME will work with SleepSafe Bed Customer Support for replacement parts.
You have a choice. You may choose to have the padding cover the windows or request window cutouts. All mesh windows will have the cutouts.
Important! If you order a bed with padding, we do not recommend using the bed if any of the pads have been removed. Removing the pads will leave a gap between the mattress and the bed side. Please note that are two different sized mattresses for a bed with padding and for a bed without padding.
Yes. We make an optional Tubing Channel Cut-Out Cover that can be inserted into the Channel. The cover is fastened from the inside of the bed. For further information, call Customer Support at 866-852-2337.

No. We can add an extra window to the headboard and/or footboard and factory install the padding around the window.
Yes. but at a higher cost than if they were purchased at the time of the bed purchase. To retrofit padding, you will need to purchase a new mattress, to allow room for the padding, in addition to the padding.
Older models may need to have the foundation replaced as well. If you have any questions, call us toll-free at 866.852.2337.
Industrial strength Velcro is used to secure the padding to a SleepSafe® Bed.
The safety rail pads are extended up and over the rails and attached on the outside. The headboard and foot boards pads extend just to the top of each and attach on the inside of the bed. The pads go right to the edge of the leg in the headboard and foot board.
We recommend cleaning your SleepSafe® Bed mattress with a mild detergent and water using a soft cloth. An example would be using Dawn® Liquid Dish Detergent and water with a terry cloth. Please avoid any abrasives and solvents.
Yes, as a replacement for a SleepSafe® Bed mattress. We do not recommend using a SleepSafe® Bed mattress for other bed type. Our mattresses are designed and custom sized to fit inside a SleepSafe® Bed and may not be appropriate for other beds. Safety is our number one priority and our mattresses are designed to fits snugly within the wooden bed frame to reduce the chance of burrowing or entrapment.
If your SleepSafe® Bed was manufactured prior to 2009, and you are looking to replace your mattress, the size may be different, please call to confirm the size of the mattress for your bed 866-852-2337.
No. Standard Twin, Full and Queen sized sheets readily available at any department store will fit the appropriate SleepSafe® Bed.

No, our mattresses are not waterproof, they are water resistant. Please keep in mind, as with any nylon based material, it is not designed to withstand repeated, long standing fluid. Over time, if fluid is allowed to pool up on the surface it will eventually soak through.
SleepSafe® Beds use CertiPUR-US ® compliant foam products for our mattresses featuring gel technology. This support provides optimized pressure redistribution, rapid heat dissipation, and increases in breath-ability compared to standard foam.
If the mattress surface is subject to excessive fluid, it is highly recommended that you use an additional type of waterproof or water-resistant protective cover over or around the mattress.
In most cases, when the bed is either prescribed by a physician or justified as Medically Necessary, health insurance may cover the bed as Durable Medical Equipment.
Your Durable Medical Equipment (DME) provider can assist you in gathering the necessary documents to submit your health insurance claim. Please call Customer Support at 866-852-2337 if you need help in finding a DME provider near you.
In most cases State funded Medicaid, Medicaid Waiver Programs, Early & Periodic Screening & Diagnostic Treatment (EPSDT) Benefit and other state funded programs can cover a SleepSafe® Bed when justified as Medically Necessary.
Each State governs their own Medicaid program within Federal Guidelines so the requirements will differ from state to state. If your Medicaid claim has been denied, you may want to consider an appeal or to seek the advice of a legal advocate in your area. You can find out more information in the INSURANCE section of our website.
It all depends on your health insurance.
Most of the time your insurance company will require prior authorization. Your DME provider will need to submit a claim, a prescription from your doctor and a Letter of Medical Necessity to justify the purchase. After submitting the claim, they must wait for the insurance company to approve the purchase, BEFORE they will move forward and order the bed from us.
On our website, under INSURANCE, you will find useful information including guidelines and a template for writing letters of medical necessity, guidelines to help write your own and a link to help you with the appeals process when needed.
LMNbuilder.com can help your therapist or clinician write a letter. This web tool is invaluable when it comes to justifying a SleepSafe® Bed and producing a high quality, very detailed Letter of Medical Necessity.

Being denied for an insurance claim initially is relatively common. You can find out more information by visiting the insurance section of our website. We have found that perseverance helps. Below are some additional notes you may find helpful.
Exercise your right to the appeals process. Be sure to document everything in detail. Stay within the published timeline for submission dates, deadlines, etc.
Inquire about your eligibility for Medicaid or a Medicaid Waiver Program. If your child is still a minor, you may want to inquire with Medicaid about the Early & Periodic Screening & Diagnostic Treatment (EPSDT) which may cover the cost of a bed when straight Medicaid will not.
Look to additional funding sources in your community such as non-profit organizations.

SleepSafe® Beds use premium veneer core hardwood plywood produced domestically on PureBond® formaldehyde-free veneer core platforms and carefully monitored for a controlled thickness range.
SleepSafe® Bed’s all wood hardwood plywood panels offer clear advantages over solid wood panel applications. These panels offer great stability and durability, reducing the chance of splitting or warping which are inherent with solid wood applications.
The 4 bed posts on a SleepSafe® Bed are composed of solid wood and are designed to match the your finish choice. For example, we use solid oak posts to complement an oak finish.
PLEASE NOTE: When solid color or multi-color beds are ordered, the bed posts will be solid maple and will not match the colors of the bed panels.
The remote control for my SleepSafe® Bed with HiLo foundation is beeping and will not operate.

For SleepSafe® Beds manufactured from January 30, 2015 to the present: RESET INSTRUCTIONS
We typically do not sell our beds directly to customers. Most SleepSafe® Beds are sold through a network of more than 3000 Durable Medical Equipment (DME) providers nationwide. These courteous, knowledgeable and trusted providers are set up to assist you with submitting an insurance claim, will make your bed purchase, accept delivery and deliver and install your bed at your home. They are an integral part of the process in acquiring a SleepSafe® Bed. We as the manufacturer are not set up to assist with insurance claims, nor can we bill on your behalf.
If we were able to sell a bed to an individual, we would require payment in full, in advance, before a bed shipped. You would incur an additional $275.00 for drop shipping a bed to a residence. The individual would have to accept responsibility for accepting delivery and installation. And most importantly, there would be no local representation for after sale service if needed. We strongly recommend, even someone who wants to pay cash, to go through a local DME provider.
If you need assistance finding a DME to help you through the process of purchasing a SleepSafe® Bed, please contact us at 866-852-2337.

As with any mechanical piece of equipment that has motors, electronic parts or moving parts, preventive maintenance should be performed regularly. At least once or twice a year, examine the bed and check all screws and fasteners for tightness. Over time through movement and use, a bolt may become loose. If you find a screw or bolt that is a bit loose, you can use a Allen wrench to tighten.
Be sure to ask your dealer at the time of installation to leave the Allen wrenches provide for bed assembly. You can use them at a later date should anything need tightening.
You can clean your bed with water and mild detergent using a soft cloth. Avoid abrasives and solvents.
It’s best to call your local dealer that helped you purchase the bed. They may be able to help you move your bed. Not all dealers offer this service and may charge a fee. There is also a pamphlet and video about moving your bed available in our website’s RESOURCES, under the CONTACT tab.
The most important thing is to be extremely careful to keep all nuts, bolts and small pieces together. The bed is actually quite easy to take apart and put back together if you take your time and stay organized.

It may be necessary to submit another letter of medical necessity justifying the change. You will need to make the purchase through your local DME provider of SleepSafe Beds.

Current SleepSafe® Bed Hi-Lo and Articulated foundations use wired remote control. Older models used a wireless remote control.
Important Note: Because older Articulated foundations have a wireless remote control that is operated through radio frequencies, you cannot have more than TWO articulated beds within a 500 foot area. We can program the remotes so they will not interfere with each other, but we can only program 2 beds. If more than two beds are needed in one location, you MUST be sure that they are far enough away from each other, otherwise, when you operate one remote control, it may adjust the other bed in a different room.
